CHARLOTTE — A program that began with a single laptop distribution in 2021 has grown into a $1 million network of seven nonprofits serving roughly 1,800 households across Charlotte’s affordable-housing communities.
The latest distribution took place July 29 at Sharon Pointe Apartments, where residents picked up laptops, backpacks, school supplies and books ahead of the new school year.
Charlotte organizations Barings; E2D, or Eliminate the Digital Divide; and the Center for Digital Equity started the effort during the pandemic, distributing laptops to residents who needed digital access. Five years later, the program includes Promising Pages, Classroom Central, DigiBridge, STARS Math and Literacy Academy and Common Wealth Charlotte, spanning backpacks, school supplies, home libraries, summer camps and financial literacy classes.
