CHARLOTTE — A student at West Charlotte High School was killed in a shooting in northwest Charlotte early Saturday morning, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

MEDIC and police responded to the scene at the 6100 block of Old Plank Road around 12:26 a.m. Saturday.

There, they found a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound. MEDIC transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased, according to CMPD.

Leondra Garrett, a neighbor, close family friend, and former Alternative to Violence coordinator, told Channel 9 that the 17-year-old girl was Amari Cooper, a student at West Charlotte High School, preparing to graduate early.

Garrett said Cooper had a daughter.

Cooper is not the same West Charlotte High School Student who was involved in an incident with a police officer on Friday. That student has not yet been identified.

Police said the investigation into the homicide is ongoing.

No additional details have been made available.
