CHARLOTTE — 35-year-old Schaunteyah Stewart has been in the emergency room for the last four days. Her mother was stunned when she got the news.
“There is no way possible I’m understanding this,” said Tahesha Chambers, Stewart’s mom. “She does not get in any trouble. What do you mean she’s been shot? What do you mean?”
Police were called to the 5600 block of Albemarle Road around 2 a.m. Tuesday for a double shooting. Tavares Phifer died. Stewart was shot in the back of the head. She’s currently fighting for her life in the hospital.
“I can’t tell you what the doctors say. I can only tell you what my God says,” Chambers said. “She’s moving and she’s functioning everyday just a little bit more.”
Police arrested 29-year-old Francisco Lopez-Tadeo and charged him with first-degree murder and attempted murder. He is behind bars on an immigration hold, but that doesn’t stop Chambers from worrying he’ll be deported.
“I think he needs to stay right here and deal with this right here,” said Chambers.
Stewart is a mother of two and works in a nursing home. Her family said she loves music. Her mother said she didn’t know the gunman and the gunman didn’t know her.
“I don’t know, I don’t know. I don’t if I’m angry, sad, or I’m numb. I’m numb because I just can’t understand,” Chambers said.
Chambers thinks the only reason her daughter was shot is because the suspect was gunning for her friend and ended up shooting her too. She hopes he pays for that mistake.
