Witness recounts chaotic moments after stabbing on CATS bus in north Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A violent stabbing occurred on a CATS bus in North Charlotte, leaving the victim hospitalized in good condition, while the suspect, 57-year-old James Bennett, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.

The incident began with an argument at a bus stop between Bennett and the victim, which escalated once they boarded the bus.

Witnesses on the bus, including a woman with her two young children, described the altercation and the subsequent stabbing near the victim’s heart.

“I’m like what is going on, why is this dude bothering him and dude is trying to avoid him at all costs,” said a witness who was on the bus with her children.

“At night they can’t sleep, they literally jump in their sleep,” the witness added, describing the trauma her children experienced after witnessing the stabbing.

Court documents reveal that Bennett, who has a lengthy criminal record with numerous assault charges, was arrested hours after the stabbing. He is currently in jail with no bond.

The victim’s brother reported that the victim is still in the hospital but is recovering well.

The motive behind the argument remains unclear, but the swift actions of fellow passengers in aiding the victim highlight the community’s response to the violent incident.
