Wingate police officer diagnosed with cancer, community rallies behind family

WINGATE, N.C. — Officer Eric Tallent’s wife was told she would be lucky if she had eight more months with her husband.

The Wingate police officer was recently diagnosed with an aggressive, incurable brain tumor. Now, his community is rallying behind him and his family to support them through his treatments.

Officer Tallent works at a tight-knit Wingate Police Department with only seven officers on staff. His chief described him as someone who loves to serve.

Before serving as a police officer, he was in the U.S. Army. Now, he is also a husband and father of five children.

The Have a Heart Foundation of Union County is working to support the family during Officer Tallent’s treatments. The foundation started a GoFundMe for his treatments.

But his community hasn’t stopped there.

Wingate Social House is hosting a charity concert for Officer Tallent and his family. The concert will feature Brayden Howell, Dougie Plant, and Shady Ln. on Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Proceeds will go to the Tallent family.

“Brandi, Eric’s wife, just wanted everybody to know they are extremely grateful and appreciate everything that has been donated to them, and they continue to ask for everyone’s prayers,” said Lt. Morgan Malone, President of Have a Heart Foundation of Union County.
