CHARLOTTE — Around 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, residents heard the sound of gunfire along Oakwood Road.
“I was in the neighborhood, riding my skateboard and came home to all the police cars outside,” said Zane Wirth, a resident.
Police said that two men were shot to death in the front yard of a home.
“There was apparently some sort of altercation with some individuals in the front yard and things escalated, resulting in this unfortunate outcome,” said Major Ryan Kendall with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
The incident drew a response from We Are One Charlotte, a community group fighting to reduce violent crime.
“Very heartbreaking,” said Life Morris with We Are One Charlotte. “Very heartbreaking. Something like this is what We Are One Charlotte is trying to prevent in our city.”
Neighbors told Channel 9 the street is normally quite. Wirth just moved in three weeks ago.
“It’s pretty shocking,” said Wirth. “It’s a little concerning. More concerning now. I do have a family that lives here.”
“There was a group involved in some kind of altercation,” said Major Kendall. “The assumption is that there are people who witnessed this who are not on scene.”
It’s still early so police have not released the victim’s names. No one has been arrested and investigators are trying to track down witnesses.
