Three children hit by car at lemonade stand near Morganton, driver charged

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after three children were hit by a car while selling lemonade south of Morganton.

It happened on Conley Road near Highway 64.

According to troopers, two of the children were airlifted with serious injuries.

Investigators told Channel 9’s Dave Faherty that an SUV pulled into the path of the car, knocking that car off the road into the yard where the children were selling lemonade.

According to troopers, those children had decided to sell the beverage because of the hot weather.

Faherty also spoke with the driver of the car that hit the children. She was distraught as she described the crash with the SUV. She said moments after that incident, her car was sent into the yard with children.

Troopers said the girls were aged 7, 8, and 9 years old.

A neighbor in the area also said she rushed over to help.

“I went over there and prayed over them and asked Jesus to just lay his hands on top of them and for the parents and for everyone that witnessed this tragic event,” the neighbor explained.

On Wednesday, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the driver of the SUV, Haley Erin McCorkle, was charged with failure to yield the right of way causing serious bodily injury. Investigators said they don’t believe she was impaired or speeding at the time.
