Community stands together in wake of shooting at tree-lighting event

CONCORD, N.C. — One of the teens charged in a shooting Friday night at Concord’s Christmas tree lighting will remain in jail after a judge rejected his release Monday, as the community continues to rally around victims and local businesses shaken by the chaos.

Downtown Concord during Christmas time is about as close to a Hallmark movie as you’ll get, and the town’s annual Christmas tree lighting is always a big draw.

When a big event like this happens, you can guarantee Michael Anderson will be there.

“We wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Anderson said.

But on Friday, the world felt like it was crashing down and chaos descended upon the small town.

“The one thing I can’t get on my head are the kids’ faces running, because they didn’t know what was going on,” Anderson said. “They didn’t understand.”

On Monday, signs of the shooting remained at 2 Gals Kitchen. The restaurant posted photos to social media showing the damage inside and out.

Three people were shot inside. One was shot outside. Police said it was not an active shooting situation.

Anderson and his son, Dylan, hope people will support the restaurant when it reopens Tuesday.

“This should be like lines out of the state for them,” Dylan said. “I mean, they deserve all the love.”

Amid the chaos, Anderson captured a photo of a mother holding her child, basking in the light of police lights and sirens.

“That just encapsulates how we felt in that moment as a community,” Anderson said.

His photos the next day showed that same community, standing strong when the city chose to go on with its annual Christmas parade.

“I think, as a community, it showed our strength coming together,” Anderson said.

The investigation

A 17-year-old suspect appeared virtually in court, sometimes teary-eyed, with family members watching as the judge read his charges. Law enforcement lined the courtroom, pushing back against any possibility of his release.

Everyone involved knew each other, authorities said.

Keyvyonn Bostic, a junior and football player at Concord High, according to his attorney, is charged as an adult with felony riot and felony accessory after the fact to assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.

Another suspect, 18-year-old Nasir Bostic, was shot and remains in critical condition in the hospital. He will be charged once he’s released.

A third suspect, a minor, was also shot and is charged in the shooting.

Police say two other teens were caught in the crossfire and also shot.

Witnesses told Channel 9 they ran for their lives as gunfire broke out.

“What was really devastating was seeing everybody’s panic face, parents hiding their kids,” resident Melissa France said. “That was horrible.”

Investigators say this case is still in its early stages, and more charges are possible. The motive has not been released.

Bostic is being held without bail. His next court date is set for Dec. 15.
