Former daycare worker accused of assaulting 7 children at church development center

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A former daycare worker in Conover has been accused of assaulting more than a half dozen children under the age of four.

Police said it happened at the Woodlawn Baptist Child Development Center.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty found out there are cameras inside every one of the classrooms.

The church said they have turned over that video evidence to authorities. That evidence led to Kaleigh Gambill being charged with 8 counts of assault on a child.

The police chief said that the case involves seven children under the age of four. Parents confirmed with Channel 9 that Gambill was a teacher for the 2-year-old classroom at the center.

Church members told Channel 9 that they learned of the allegations in December when someone with the North Carolina Division of Child Development reported a complaint about possible abuse.

The pastor said they reviewed surveillance video from inside the building for the previous two weeks. After watching the video, Gambill was fired.

According to jail records, Gambill has been released after posting an $80,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
