Suspects accused of shooting inside Lancaster Walmart appear in court

LANCASTER, S.C. — Police arrested two suspects for a shooting that happened Tuesday afternoon inside the Lancaster Walmart. There have also been warrants issued for three adults and a petition to be obtained from the Department of Juvenile Justice regarding another suspect. Police are searching two of those adults and the minor.

Police have already arrested Lareakus Cunningham, 18, and Na’Rickio Mickle, 19, for the shooting.

They are facing charges of attempted murder, breach of peace, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

In court on Wednesday, Cunningham asked if the judge had seen the video of what took place inside the Walmart. He seemed eager to have a bond set, but that didn’t happen. The judge also denied bond for Mickle.

Lancaster police said they received multiple calls around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday about the shooting.

Officers said two people were shot near the automotive section inside the packed store.

The victims were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An argument between people who knew each other led to the shooting, police said.

One of the warrants issued is for a man being treated in a hospital. After he is released, he will be arrested, police said.

“To hear that this happened here is just very devastating,” said Walmart customer Jeanie Uchinson. “If you’re shooting in a Walmart, you don’t care if there’s a kid there. You don’t care if there’s a child or a pregnant woman. And so, to have that kind of lack of respect for life is just horrendous.”

Area schools were put on lockdown as a precaution even though the students were not in danger.

“I feel like we need to come together as community,” said student Gavin Boyd, Lancaster High School. “It needs to stop. All the gun violence.”

He said the school was locked down from 3:03 p.m. to the end of classes.

The Walmart is closed on Wednedsay. It is unclear if the store will reopen on Thursday.

“Violence like this is unacceptable. We appreciate police and first responders for acting quickly,” a spokesperson for Walmart said in a statement. “We’re cooperating with law enforcement during their investigation.”
