CHARLOTTE — A man who last week rammed into cars in a Belmont Walmart parking lot, and led police on a chase before crashing into a ravine in Charlotte was captured Tuesday morning hiding out in a hotel, Gaston County Police announced.
On Jan. 16, Gaston County Police officers saw Johntavius Jaquine Ellington, 30, of Charlotte, sitting in an SUV at the Walmart in Belmont. He was wanted on many felonies, including drug trafficking.
Officers went to arrest him, but he drove off, slamming into several cars, including police cruisers.
“He rammed the car, my car, and pushed me all the way out of the parking place,” Dawn Adkins told Channel 9′s Ken Lemon that day.
Officers pursued Ellington on Interstate 85 into Mecklenburg County until he crashed into a ravine on South Hoskins Road in northwest Charlotte.
Ellington then ran away, eluding police until Tuesday morning when the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested him at the Charlotte Express Inn on Lucky Penny Street.
He was wanted on the following felonies: assault with a deadly weapon against three Gaston County police officers, felony flee to elude arrest, trafficking methamphetamine, and trafficking cocaine.
Gaston County Police K-9 Rocky cut his paw while tracking Ellington at the ravine on South Hoskins Road. He was treated and is recovering at home with his handler.
