Staff member brings gun to Butler High School, prompts investigation

CHARLOTTE — A staff member at Butler High School brought a gun to campus, prompting an investigation by law enforcement.

The incident was reported by another staff member, and no students or staff were harmed as they were engaged in activities on the outskirts of the campus.

According to an affidavit obtained by Channel 9, the staffer was identified as Justin Moyer.

The affidavit says another staffer spotted a fanny pack with a handgun inside it in the learning center at the school. The staffer reported it to a principal, who found that the bag belonged to Moyer.

Police said they found two handguns inside the bag, including a Glock pistol and a North America Arms .22 cal. The affidavit says Moyer has a concealed carry permit from Cabarrus County and had no violations.

Principal Blakeney assured families that the safety and well-being of students and staff are the school’s top priority.

Possession of a weapon on school grounds is a violation of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board policy and carries serious consequences.
