BURKE, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly head-on crash in Burke County where two men were killed over the weekend.
State troopers told Channel 9′s Dave Faherty that speed was a factor in the crash that happened around 5 p.m. Sunday on Airport Rhodhiss Road.
NCSHP said the crash started when a pickup truck went off the road, overcorrected and then came back across the centerline, striking a Lincoln Continental.
The driver of the pickup truck, 54-year-old Gregory Neal Huffman, died at the scene.
Troopers said 45-year-old Charles Verle Kistler Jr., who was driving the Lincoln, died on the way to the hospital. Viewers shared photos of Kistler with Channel 9, including the one below.
Faherty spoke with several Burke County residents who witnessed the crash.
They said there have been other deadly crashes in the area and in just about every wreck, speed has been a factor.
We’ve reached out to NCSHP to get a speed estimate of the truck and also to find out if they plan on stepping up patrols in eastern Burke County.
We’ll have more tonight on Channel 9 Eyewitness News at 5:30 p.m.
