Possible snow and ice prompt remote learning and delays in NC counties

NORTH CAROLINA — Several school districts in North Carolina have announced schedule changes for Friday, Dec. 5, due to an incoming winter storm predicted to bring snow and ice.

Avery County Schools announced students will join classes remotely due to weather conditions.

Ashe County Schools will hold a remote learning day, with classes starting at 10 a.m. via Zoom, to ensure student safety during hazardous travel conditions.

Alexander County Schools will also operate as a remote day due to uncertain travel conditions. All buildings will be closed to students, but open to staff.

Watauga County Schools will operate on an inclement-weather remote learning day Friday, due to freezing rain, ice-covered secondary roads and below-freezing temperatures. Teachers and other staff may choose to report to school buildings but must do so on a two-hour delay. The Holiday/Snow Program at Hardin Park School will open at 9 a.m.

Catawba County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for students, staff and QUEST.

Caldwell County schools will have a two-hour delay to ensure the safety of students and staff. The district asks parents and staff to be on the lookout for possible additional updates and alerts Friday morning.

The district has also advised that any changes to bus routes due to weather conditions will be communicated by 8 a.m., with parents encouraged to check the transportation website for updates.

Avery County Schools will also have a two-hour delay for students, with any changes to be announced by 6:30 a.m.

Iredell-Statesville Schools will follow a similar two-hour delay schedule, with road conditions to be reassessed by 6:30 a.m. for any further adjustments.

Hickory City Schools will also operate on a two-hour delay for both staff and students.

With the forecasted winter storm, schools across these counties are taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of students and staff. Parents and students are advised to stay informed through school communications and transportation updates.
