Woman charged after shooting at Back to School event in west Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Shots were fired at C.W. Williams Community Health Center’s Back to School Community Health Fair on Saturday afternoon in west Charlotte.

The CEO of C.W. Williams, Debra Weeks said while she is proud of the event, the volunteers and staff that made it possible, she is very disappointed about the violence that occurred near the end of the fair.

Weeks told Channel 9 that a woman whose son was involved in an altercation pulled out a gun and fired several rounds in the air like a warning shot.

“We don’t know the lady and in fact thankfully, no one was injured. That’s the most important thing,” said Weeks.

Police arrived quickly and arrested Cherez Davis in connection to the shooting.

Cherez Davis is in jail under a $250,000 bond. Davis is charged with going armed to the terror of people and carrying a concealed weapon. Court documents say Davis said that there was an argument with her son and another boy. Davis stated that another adult then got involved so she reached into her backpack and pulled out her gun.

Davis told police she fired two shots into the air to try to break up the fight, documents said.

“We care,” Weeks said. “We’ve been here for about four, almost five generations. We do care about this community.”

“But once you perpetrate or have this type of incident occur, we can’t have you back on our property,” the CEO said. “That’s the biggest problem and we want to be there for her and her children.”
