Rock Hill School Board starts search for new superintendent

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Rock Hill Schools Superintendent Dr. Tommy Schmolze is set to retire on January 31st, prompting the school board to begin the search for his replacement.

Dr. Schmolze announced his retirement during a meeting on Tuesday night after serving as superintendent for four years. His departure comes in the middle of the school year, leaving the timeline for hiring a new superintendent uncertain.

“It is arguably the most important job a school district has. It sets the vision for a school district,” said Helena Miller, chair of the Rock Hill School Board of Trustees, regarding the superintendent position. Miller emphasized the importance of finding the right person for the job, stating, “I think it’s absolutely a possibility, but personally I think timeline is not the most important factor; the most important factor is that we find the right person.”

The school board has not yet decided whether to conduct the search for a new superintendent locally, statewide, or nationwide. They plan to discuss the process further at a board meeting next month. Miller highlighted challenges such as teacher recruitment and retention, noting that financial constraints will require strategic use of district funds to provide quality education.

As the Rock Hill School Board prepares for this transition, the focus remains on selecting a leader who can address the district’s challenges and set a clear vision for the future.
