Business owners speak out after string of south Charlotte break-ins

CHARLOTTE — Two well-known shopping centers in the Charlotte area have been targeted by smash-and-grab artists. One of the stories hit was Blue Mercury.

Saturday morning there was an unfamiliar sight at the Park Road Shopping Center. Crews cleaned up following a number of doors and windows being smashed in at a variety of businesses.

“It was definitely a surprise,” said Jiacomo Fagan who works at Suraez Bakery. “I’ve worked here for 20 years. We’ve had petty crimes, but nothing like this.”

Fagan works in the family business at the bakery.

“As far as I know, they didn’t take anything,” said Fagan.

The thieves left a wave of damage behind. In security footage from Dolce Lusso, you can see the suspects smashing in the glass door and going after the cash register. This took place Saturday morning.

Thursday night there was a similar smash-and-grab at Ballantyne Village. Several stores and restaurants were hit.

“It’s really annoying to us,” said Trung Do, the owner of Crispy Banh Mi, a Vietnamese restaurant. “It didn’t help our business at all. Thank God we all have insurance and the landlord also have insurance.”

The front door of Do’s restaurant was smashed in.

Many of the businesses primarily survive on credit and debit cards, so the thieves may not have gotten much.

“Young, had no clue what was going on,” Fagan said.

Police have not said anything about the break-ins. We are asking if they are connected.

This is a developing story. Check back with wsoctv.com for updates.
