Drowning victim found at Mountain Island Lake

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — A drowning victim was found after an hours-long recovery effort in Mountain Island Lake Friday.

We learned that a swimmer drowned around 7:30 p.m. Thursday, and Channel 9’s Glenn Counts went to the scene to gather more information.

According to Mount Holly Deputy Fire Chief Craig Spry, “A gentleman had jumped into the water to try and save a family member or friend who was showing signs of distress. That gentleman was successful in doing that and was able to get that person back to the sandbar or to shallower ground. In the midst of that, that gentleman went back down.”

Around 1:30 p.m., the Huntersville Fire Department said that search crews “Were able to bring closure to the family and friends of the victim.”

HFD used multiple boats in the recovery effort, and the department wrote that firefighters “appreciate the support of the boating community.”

The victim hasn’t been publicly identified yet.

No additional details have been made available.
