Rapper sponsors community event, returns to scene where he says he got shot

CHARLOTTE — A rapper isn’t letting a gunshot wound keep him from working in the community.

He said he is one of the three victims who were hurt in a shooting in west Charlotte last night. Today, Channel 9’s Glenn Counts spoke with him as he returned to the scene to bring people together.

Police have not identified Mario “Grove Hero” Bradley as one of the shooting victims, but he identified himself in a social media post.

Today Bradley sponsored a community event where he was in a wheelchair.

He was allegedly wounded Saturday night just outside the Boost Mobile store along with two other victims. Thankfully, officers said none of the injuries were life-threatening. In Bradley’s social media post, he said a bullet was lodged near his spine, but he refused to cancel Sunday’s event.

“Just for him coming out here after he got shot, made me come for sure, got to show love,” said Patrick Brown, a fan.

Grove Hero is a Memphis-based rap artist and in his home town, a street has been named after him because of his charitable works. Channel 9 was able to talk to him, but he declined to go on camera. He said he was feeling fine and that he thinks it will be a couple of weeks before he can move around like normal.

A lot of people who came to the event were impressed that he didn’t cancel given his close call. Another fan, Deidre Pratt, said she was shocked by the events that took place last night.

“Why? What would be the reason for this type of thing to happen for somebody so positive?” said Pratt. “Just bringing a good vibe.”

Shacara Allen, who was at today’s event said you have to have perseverance, even when things happen to you.

“You know, you can’t just give up,” said Allen. “I was shocked to see he still came out the next day.”

Police are still busy working the case. They haven’t said if they have made an arrest or if a suspect or suspects have been identified.
