Missionary wounded in Monroe shooting; two suspects flee scene

MONROE, N.C. — A 19-year-old was hurt, and a suspect is on the run after a shooting in Monroe early Wednesday morning.

Police say the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. as the missionary was speaking with someone in the breezeway of an apartment complex.

The victim, in shock after being shot, called 911 and ran to the woods to hide. They were later released from an area hospital after receiving treatment.

Lt. Morgan Malone of the Monroe Police stated, “We do not think it was random, but we do not think he was the intended target of that shooting.”

Police have confirmed that there were two shooters involved, as evidenced by two different shell casings found at the scene.

“I was literally on the balcony just chilling and stuff, it’s quiet like a normal night, and then I heard a big explosion, big shot sound,” said Kevin Powell, a neighbor who heard the gunfire.

Police are actively searching for the shooters and are collecting evidence, including looking for cameras or audio that might provide more information.

There was another shooting at the same apartment complex earlier this summer, although the area is generally considered safe.

“I hope they catch the person who did it,” said Powell.

Residents are urged to contact Monroe Police if they have any video or audio that could assist in the investigation.

As police continue their investigation, the community remains on alert, hoping for a swift resolution to the case.
