LANCASTER, S.C. — Two people were shot Tuesday afternoon inside the Walmart on Highway 9 Bypass West in Lancaster, police confirmed at a news conference following the incident.
The shooting stemmed from an argument between people who knew each other. The shots were fired in the automotive section, according to the preliminary investigation.
The shooting victims, who were males, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
One person has been detained.
Employees told Channel 9 they heard about seven gunshots.
A woman went to Walmart to check on a relative who works there.
“It’s crazy, crazy,” the woman told Channel 9. “You can’t even go in there and shop ... terrible.”
Grandmother Michelle Helms said she was shopping with her 6-year-old granddaughter when their trip quickly turned into a nightmare.
“You heard the arguing, and then the next thing that you know, you watch the little guy pull the gun out from under his clothes. And, I mean, he just started shooting,” said Helms.
Helms said she was in the automotive section when the gunfire erupted and heard at least 10 shots.
“Everybody was running and screaming, and it was pretty horrifying,” said Helms. “I never expected big city crime to happen in such a small town as Lancaster. I would never have in a million years thought that something like that would take place.”
Helms said Walmart is her neighborhood grocery store, and she plans to continue shopping there going forward.
“I will definitely be back, but I will definitely be on my P’s and Q’s more so than probably ever,” Helms explained.
