CHARLOTTE — The pedestrian in a fatal east Charlotte crash has been identified.

Joseph Jackson, 41, was struck and killed on East Independence Boulevard Sunday night.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded the scene in the Independence Division and found Jackson lying unresponsive in the roadway.

MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene, while the driver of a Chevrolet Silverado reported no injuries.

Detectives from CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force arrived to conduct a investigation of the crash. Members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) processed the scene and collected physical evidence, with assistance from Charlotte Fire.

Initial findings suggest Jackson was crossing the freeway in an area not designated for pedestrian traffic and was not wearing reflective clothing.

The driver was screened for impairment and was found not to be impaired, though toxicology results for Jackson are pending.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
