7-year-old shot while sleeping in critical condition; suspect on the loose

PAGELAND, S.C. — Pageland police officers are still searching for the person who shot a seven-year-old girl while sleeping in her home in a drive-by after 1 a.m. Sunday on Brewer Circle.

Skylar Baker is fighting for her life and is in critical condition in what police called a “careless act of violence.”

The girl’s grandfather said she is making progress.

“That’s my son’s friend,” said Melissa Massey, a neighbor. “They play ball together and it just hurt his hear to hear about that.”

Massey said Skylar is a little girl full of joy.

“She was always sweet,” Massey said. “She’d smile. She’d wave at me.”

Massey said it’s hard to believe anyone would do this.

“Down here, that’s unheard of,” she said. “Drive-bys? Maybe shooting. Maybe, but drive-bys, that’s crazy.”

Pageland police said they don’t have a motive for the crime.

Authorities are asking anyone who lives in the area to check their security cameras for possible evidence.
