RALEIGH — The North Carolina DMV is now allowing walk-ins all day at 82 of its 115 offices, including all Charlotte locations, to help customers avoid the summer heat.
Previously, customers without appointments had to wait until noon to be seen, but the new changes aim to prevent people from standing in long lines outside in the heat.
“I think it’s a, you know, a good idea,” said William Dodes, who visited the DMV as a walk-in for his learner’s permit.
Troy Whitehead, who spent nearly six hours at the DMV on Arrowood Road to get his license renewed, said he came in as a walk-in trying to avoid the heat.
“I had stayed in the car in the air condition. I almost ran my gas out,” he explained.
William Dodes described his experience, noting that examiners checked him in and reviewed his documents before he waited in his vehicle.
He received text notifications letting him know when there was room in the lobby and when it was his turn to be served.
DMV officials are also reminding customers to check the requirements for their particular service on the NCDMV.gov website before visiting an office.
The new system is designed to make the DMV experience more comfortable during the hot summer months, especially for those who might struggle with the heat, like older individuals.
In addition to allowing walk-ins, DMV examiners will check people in and then have them wait in their cars or at nearby businesses until space becomes available in the office lobby.
