CHARLOTTE — While firefighters were out responding to a call, multiple cars were being broken into at their station.
After returning to Station 10 along Wilkinson Boulevard, firefighters caught Dion Terrell Campbell, 35, in the act.
Court documents said that he had broken into multiple vehicles and allegedly stole numerous items.
“Well it’s just a shame,” said Deanna Reese, a resident whose home is covered by Station 10. “They are risking their lives for our community.”
Reese said she moved back to the area in the 1970s.
“It was a really nice area, but now I don’t know what’s going on with this generation,” she said.
When police arrived and searched Campbell, they said he was armed with a box cutter and a pocket knife.
Another resident described Campbell’s behavior as “despicable.”
“They are out there risking their lives, running into burning buildings and stuff, trying to save people,” said Kaden Miller.
Campbell has been charged with trespassing, breaking into vehicles, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest. He is currently in the Mecklenburg County jail under no bond.
Campbell’s first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
