Mooresville girls’ flag football player nominated for national award

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A flag football player from Mooresville caught the eye of USA Football, gaining her the chance to play in front of scouts from the U.S. national team.

She’s also making history.

USA Football noticed Lilly Rumrill as she starred on offense and defense on the Mooresville High School Blue Devils’ brand-new girls’ flag football team. USA Football, which runs the flag national team, invited Rumrill to an all-star showcase in front of scouts from the US national team.

“To actually compete real hard for that and work against other skilled girls — it was challenging. But I love challenges,” Rumrill said.

She started playing on a boys’ football team in New Hampshire at the age of seven.

Now, after two and a half hours at practice, kicking for Mooresville High School’s tackle team, she heads to flag practice with girls she helped recruit.

“I would just drive over still in my cleats,” Rumrill said.

She recruited girls she knew were involved in other sports, including her teammates on the Blue Devils softball team, with the desire to share her love for the sport.

“The footwork, the hands, you use all your skills, you get to show off to everybody, you want to be the star out there, you want to be recognized, come show everyone you can do it,” she said.

Rumrill signed to play flag football at Milligan University in Tennessee, making her the first player in North Carolina history to sign to play flag football in college.
