MAP: Council voting on $31 million to resurface hundreds of Charlotte’s roads

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte City Council has big plans to improve your drive around town.

Councilmembers are set to vote this week on whether to spend $31 million on resurfacing more than 200 city roads.

Channel 9′s Eli Brand had a look at the plans on Friday and spoke with a business owner who said he supports the plan – and wouldn’t mind it being taken even further.

Brian Mack has worked at the House of Hoops Barbershop on Tuckaseegee Road since his son, former South Carolina basketball star B.J. Mack, helped him open it last year.

Councilmembers are set to vote next week on whether to spend $31 million on resurfacing more than 200 city roads.

He frequents the road, one of dozens that could be repaved if approved by the Charlotte City Council. Mack says the Queen City does a good job of road maintenance.

“I think it’s a good improvement. Compared to some other places, Charlotte is a beautiful city but any kind of expansion or advancement on this side of town, I think is worth it,” Mack said.

The roads selected for resurfacing were judged based on their pavement condition ratings which were determined by city staff.

Work would include asphalt and pavement milling, paving and treatment, as well as accessible ramp and sidewalk installations, and curb repairs.

Mack said Tuckaseegee Road in particular shouldn’t just be repaved, it should be expanded.

“For the amount of people that’s moving in this area, with the airport expanding, it does need to be expanded because it’s very tight in there,” Mack said. “Then we have the industrial area so there are a lot of trucks coming, so I do think it needs to be expanded a little bit.”

Paving usually happens between April and October, according to the city.

The official vote is expected to happen on Monday.
