‘Hope it haunts him’: Family says joke led to deadly shooting at University City sports bar

CHARLOTTE — A man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at a sports bar in University City, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

It happened overnight Tuesday at the 1st and Goal sports bar off of University City Boulevard.

The victim, 22-year-old Jorden Christion Mason, died from his injuries at a local hospital, according to police.

On Friday, police announced that 33-year-old Anthony Murry Alexander had been identified as a suspect in this case.

Alexander was arrested and charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to police.

Channel 9’s Glenn Counts spoke with Mason’s family, who said he graduated from Hopewell High School and had dreams of becoming a rap artist.

“I have not slept or ate since I found this out about my child. It’s the most heartbreaking thing that could ever happen,” said Mason’s mother, Temekia Dae.

“I was just thankful to get to be there beside him through his life; I’d be there every day,” said Mason’s brother, Jalen Thomas.

The family said they are trying to come to grips with the loss and how senseless they feel it was.

“A comment was made about a girl, and the guy said something to my son. And my son said he didn’t know that was his girl, no disrespect,” said Dae. “That was a 33-year-old man; my son is 22. I just don’t understand. Looking at his arrest record, he’s 5′8″ and 200 pounds, and my son is 5′6″ and 135 pounds. There was nothing he could have done to that man. He couldn’t have feared for his life. What could he have done that was so bad that he had to shoot him in a parking lot and leave him there to die?”

Dae expressed that she hopes Alexander never gets out of jail.

“I hope he has to relive that day in his head every day of killing my son, taking him from his family, and I hope it haunts him for the rest of his life,” Dae emphasized.

According to police records, Alexander is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail without bond.
