CHARLOTTE — On Wednesday, Ricky Robbins announced his candidacy for Mecklenburg County Sheriff, aiming to bring a fresh perspective to the office currently held by Garry McFadden.

Robbins, who has a long-standing connection to Charlotte and a 30-year history in law enforcement, will challenge McFadden in the upcoming primary election, which is just nine months away.

“I don’t look at it as running against a person; I’m running against an office,” Robbins stated, emphasizing his focus on the role rather than the individual.

Robbins and McFadden have worked together for over a decade in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit.

Despite their professional history, Robbins insists that the campaign is not personal, stating, “Both of us have said it’s not personal, it’s business, so I’m not out to tarnish Gary’s name; I don’t think Gary is out to tarnish mine.”

Robbins is endorsed by former CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe, which adds significant weight to his campaign.

He highlights his deep roots in the community, saying, “I was born here, so I was raised in Charlotte Mecklenburg. I’ve worked every corner of Charlotte and Mecklenburg as a police officer.”

Current Sheriff McFadden has faced controversies during his tenure, including issues related to immigration.

Robbins believes his experience offers a new perspective, saying, “My benefit is I’ve gotten to see how it’s been handled and how both sides have handled it. I think I’m going into where I can say this is what I need to do to correct any error on either side.”

Political expert Eric Herberlig from UNCC commented on Robbins’ candidacy, noting that having a candidate with police experience and a prominent endorser like Monroe makes the race more intriguing.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Robbins works security for the Carolina Panthers and is often seen accompanying the coach off the field.
