IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Dakoda Michael Drake was sentenced to 19 to 32 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter and delivery of a controlled substance after supplying a fatal dose of fentanyl to Julius Chance Gunter in 2022.
The sentencing took place on Feb. 4 following a plea agreement accepted by Drake. The case stemmed from an incident on July 23, 2022, when Gunter was found unresponsive at a home on Hickory Highway in Iredell County. Despite emergency efforts, including the administration of NARCAN, Gunter later died from an accidental fentanyl overdose.
Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that the investigation, led by Detective D. Wyatt, used cellular phone data, witness statements, and medical records to identify Drake as the supplier of the fentanyl.
“Fentanyl is a deadly drug that is taking far too many lives, and we will continue to hold those who distribute it accountable,” said Campbell.
In addition to the primary sentence, Drake received an additional 6 to 17 months for a probation violation.
Sheriff Campbell emphasized the ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of fentanyl in the community, highlighting the commitment to using all available resources to prevent further tragedies.
