Investigation underway in officer-involved shooting in Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. — An officer-involved shooting is under investigation in Wingate after deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance on Canary Court early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred when deputies arrived at a home following reports of a domestic disturbance involving a weapon at about 4 a.m.

The sheriff’s office says a man and a woman were fighting over a gun when deputies heard the struggle from outside and broke in to intervene.

During the encounter, officers say one person was shot in the leg by a deputy and was taken to a local hospital, where they are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gloria Coffey said she’s known the couple who lives at the home on Canary Court for years and was heartbroken to see crime tape surrounding it.

“I think that was important so no one would have gotten killed,” Coffey said. “That would have been a real sad situation.”

The sheriff’s office says they have responded to this home several times in the past for domestic disturbances, but they say it’s the first time things escalated to this level.

“We can’t stress this enough, if you are in a domestic violence or you are experiencing domestic violence, we can help you,” Lt. James Maye told Channel 9’s Gina Esposito. “There are resources out there. We just encourage you to call us before something like this happens.”

Sisters Cassidy and Lexie Rolando live down the street and said they know the couple’s daughter.

“That’s the kind of thing you see on the news in other neighborhoods and other communities and never think it’s going to happen in yours,” said Cassidy Rolando.

“I’m just glad everybody is OK and seems to be good,” her sister said.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that all deputies involved in the incident are safe and uninjured. Sheriff Eddie Cathey has requested that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conduct an investigation, which is standard procedure in such cases.

Authorities have stated that this is believed to be an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Further information will be provided as the investigation continues.
