CHARLOTTE — A man who was shot by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Thursday morning in southeast Charlotte will face multiple charges after he get out of the hospital.
The shooting took place shortly before 2 a.m. on Pineborough Road, according to a release from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
Police say they got a call from a family member of Belvin Hall IV, 20, just before 2 a.m. saying he was “acting erratically” outside of their home on Pineborough Road. That caller also warned police that he was outside their home and had a gun.
The day before, a family member tried to get an involuntary commitment but it was denied by a Mecklenburg County magistrate, CMPD said. An involuntary commitment is a legal process that places someone in a treatment facility against their will if they are struggling with mental health or substance use and pose a risk of harming themselves or others, according to the state public health department.
CMPD officers got to the home in those early hours of Thursday morning and said Hall immediately began shooting at officers multiple times, prompting police to return fire.
Channel 9’s Eli Brand spoke to a witness who requested he stay anonymous. He said he got a call about the shots from his sister.
“She said gunshots woke her up — 20 gunshots at least,” he said. “She said they were so close she thought they were shooting at her.”
Police said the Hall was hit several times.
After the shooting, officers immediately began rendering aid to the suspect, who was then transported by MEDIC to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Hall remained in the hospital Thursday night in stable condition.
After Hall gets out of the hospital, police will charge him with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, assault on a government official with a firearm, and shooting into an occupied vehicle.
The initial investigation indicates that no officers were struck by gunfire, although three officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Investigators said a firearm was recovered at the scene.
Several neighbors said this incident is unusual, and it will leave a mark on them.
“It’s shocking to see that over here,” the witness said. “I’ve been here for a year and a half going on now, and this is the first time I’ve seen this — can’t shoot at the police and not expect them to return fire.”
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the case. As per standard protocol, the officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate but parallel investigation into the shooting.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as they continue to gather details about the incident.
