MONROE, N.C. — Snow and ice continued to melt in downtown Monroe on Monday morning, which caused a slushy, slippery mess on sidewalks.
The roads were cleared but the biggest concern was that it is set to refreeze at night.
Monroe resident Tobyn LaVergne, who ventured out for breakfast, said conditions have not been bad.
“The main roads are clear but there’s still some icing,” LaVergne said. “You need to pay attention to the parking lots, and it can still be slippery. It’s not something that you need to out in, if you’re not used to driving in it.”
He’s not alone with that advice.
“I am the kind of southerner who will not drive in any kind of icy weather,” said Monroe resident Zandi Watts.
Power didn’t go out, but many businesses adjusted their hours to keep customers and employees safe.
Motorists are urged to take it slow after the sun goes down because of black ice. Lows Monday night will get down to 12 degrees under clear skies for Monroe. Highs on Tuesday will be near 40.
