CHARLOTTE — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are investigating a homicide that left a 15-year-old dead late Thursday night in northeast Charlotte, police said.
Officers responded to a shooting around 11:30 p.m. at an apartment complex on Merrick Street near North Tryon Street and Old Concord Road, according to a CMPD incident report.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene, MEDIC confirmed.
Residents said the shooting happened in a hallway on the second floor.
Bullets grazed the walls as the victim tried to get away.
The teen got all the way to the end of the hall, where he collapsed.
A resident, who didn’t want to be identified, said she heard gunshots.
“Was in the bathroom, and it wasn’t like a quick reaction,” the resident said. “It’s normal stuff over here, but it sounded pretty close to my apartment building. It’s kind of nerve-racking because living here for three or four years, it was kind of common stuff.”
Another resident said they were stunned by the murder and are now scared.
“I really don’t want my kids to come out and play because this is like normal stuff, so it’s kind of nerve-racking to hear the 15-year-old died,” said one resident.
Neighbor Evette Nelson expressed her sympathy for the family.
“I can feel, and I mourn for the mom and family because I can feel, I can feel what they are going through,” said Nelson. “It should not be like this when all you are trying to do is just live and make a living and support your family.”
There is no word on possible suspects or the victim’s identity.
The investigation is ongoing, and CMPD will release additional information as it becomes available.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the authorities.
