Grandmother killed in Alexander County mobile home fire

STONY POINT, N.C. — A grandmother died in a mobile home fire Thursday morning in Alexander County, family members said.

Five fire departments were called to the home in Stony Point shortly before 8 a.m.

Rebecca Smith, who lives next door, had just taken her dogs out when she felt an explosion.

“Next thing you know I heard ‘poof’ like a black cloud, and I looked around and the next thing you know, the trailer is on fire,” Smith said.

Once inside, firefighters discovered Sandra Kay Ball Duke, 64, of Stony Point, in a bedroom. Life-saving attempts were made but she died at the scene.

The grandmother’s daughter and granddaughter were able to escape the fire at the Mickey Hager mobile home park. They were treated for injuries that were not serious, firefighters said.

Oxygen tanks were inside the home, which could have been the source of the explosions, investigators said.

They didn’t find any smoke detectors.

Their focus is on the kitchen.

The SBI and fire marshal’s office are investigating the cause and the death.

“I want to know what happened,” a relative said.

“It’s a shock,” Smith said. “We would all love to know (what happened), but right now, it’s a question mark on what happened. We don’t really know what caused it.”

No additional details have been made available.
