CHARLOTTE — Charlotte firefighters said multiple vehicles were broken into at several fire stations after suspects cut through fences and smashed windows to get inside.
Someone cut a hole in the fence to get to firefighters’ cars at Fire Station 25 on Pleasant Grove Road in Charlotte.
“Of all places for this to happen,” said resident Claude Teague. “Where else are they going to go? What else are they going to do?”
Teague has lived across the street for more than 40 years. He said firefighters responded to his home for a chimney fire. He can’t believe someone would target them.
A few miles away, workers replaced a cut fence at Fire Station 21 on Little Rock Road.
In the parking lot, someone broke the driver’s side window out of an SUV.
Resident Michael Moses lives down the street and hopes those responsible are caught.
“Atrocious for someone to do something like this, especially an individual who puts their life on the line every day to go into homes and fight fires and to keep us safe,” Moses said.
It’s unclear if any of the fire departments were out on calls at the time of the break-ins or what was stolen from the vehicles.
There are surveillance cameras around the fire stations, but police have not released any video.
Michael Burski is one of the workers who repaired the fences at two of the fire houses in Charlotte. His message for the thieves.
“Get a job, for real. Get a job,” he said. “I don’t know what really to say. What I want to say you wouldn’t air.”
