MORGANTON, N.C. — Officials say that residents are being evacuated from a rehab facility in Morganton after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon.
Crews were called to Grace Heights Rehabilitation Facility Sunday afternoon for a report of a fire.
Morganton Public Safety tells Channel 9 that both Burke and Caldwell Emergency services are working to relocate 90 residents who stay in the facility.
All critical care patients were transported to UNC health campuses in Valdese, Caldwell, and Morganton.
Officials from Burke County say that there were no initial injuries to patients or emergency personnel but later after being evaluated officials say that several patients were transported to area hospitals for heat-related illnesses and smoke inhalation.
Officials say that the Foothills Higher Education Center will be used as a temporary shelter.
Burke County responders are working to reunify these patients with their families.
Families are being contacted by phone and officials say that when arriving to the Foothill Higher Education Center head to the Zaxby’s side of the building where on-site employees will help you get in contact with your loved one.
Officials say that the state fire marshal and city investigators are on scene trying to determine what sparked the fire.
Foothills Drive is temporarily closed to allow for emergency operations and ensure public safety.
This is a developing story and we will provide updates as they become available.
