Investigators confirm cause of deadly fire at south Charlotte apartment complex

CHARLOTTE — We now know what caused a deadly fire at an apartment complex in south Charlotte over the weekend.

The Charlotte Fire Department says a burning candle left in a flower box on a balcony started the two-alarm fire Sunday morning. One person, who has not been identified, was killed.

It started around 11:45 a.m. on Park Road at an apartment complex just north of South Mecklenburg High School.

CFD called multiple engines and crews for a three-story apartment building that caught fire. Crews were at the scene for several hours.

Just before 2 p.m., CFD confirmed that one resident died in the fire. Two firefighters were treated for injuries at the scene, CFD said.

CFD said over a dozen people were displaced because of the fire. The American Red Cross is helping those families.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
