CHARLOTTE — A fire destroyed Yee Xiong’s home in West Charlotte on Sunday, forcing his wife, Nai Bang, and their four children to flee as flames engulfed the house.
The fire, which was caused by a malfunction in the outdoor electrical box, left the family with virtually nothing as thick black smoke and flames consumed their belongings.
“I got a call from my wife saying that the house was on fire,” said Yee Xiong, who was out of town helping a family member when the fire started.
“I just took everybody out the door,” said Nai Bang Xiong, recalling how she and her children, aged six to twelve, escaped the burning home.
“I always feel bad that it happens, but I never thought that yesterday it was me and my family,” Yee Xiong expressed.
Among the charred remains were school supplies for the children, who are set to return to Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in just a week.
Yee Xiong lamented the loss of his cherished tools used for working on cars, stating, “I’m talking about a few thousand dollars that I worked so hard for; they’re gone.”
Despite the devastation, the family is grateful that no one was injured. “Nobody got hurt; all my kids were scared, but I’m thankful that everybody got out,” Yee Xiong said.
Nai Bang Xiong expressed her sorrow, saying, “I was in tears; we built everything from scratch. We got married really early, so we worked really hard for everything we have today.”
The family is seeking assistance as they face the loss of their home and belongings, with the first day of school fast approaching. You can donate here.
