BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Burke County wedding took a chaotic turn when the bride’s father allegedly crashed a car, then stole a volunteer firefighter’s pickup truck from the crash scene.
The Highway Patrol said Arthur Hoyle wrecked both vehicles near the Hidden Hill Wedding Venue Saturday night, leading to an hour-long search and leaving guests stranded for more than two hours.
Channel 9’s Dave Faherty spoke with a first responder from Salem Fire and Rescue whose boyfriend’s pickup truck was stolen.
She borrowed her boyfriend’s truck to respond to the scene. She could see the father of the bridge heading in the opposite direction after taking the truck.
“It’s a bad situation,” said Lt. Cameron Scism from Salem Fire and Rescue. “It’s a sad situation the way things are, and the way things happened and went down.”
“I was actually coming up the mountain in the fire truck when he come past me,” said Justin Taylor, also from Salem Fire Rescue. “A deputy was actually in front of me. I can’t describe the situation honestly.”
State troopers said Hoyle then wrecked the first responder’s truck and left the crash scene, and it took an hour to find him.
Burke County officials said several people had to stay at the wedding venue for hours while they investigated.
“At the end of the day, I forgive everything for how everything happened, but I definitely hate the situation,” said a first responder.
Hoyle was charged with stealing a car and was still in jail on Monday.
