POLKTON, N.C. — A coordinated operation on Friday successfully intercepted a drone attempting to deliver contraband into Anson Correctional Facility.
The operation involved officers from the Polkton Police Department, deputies and detectives from the Anson County Sheriff’s Office, and agents from the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
During the operation, three people were arrested on-site, and items related to the contraband delivery were seized.
The Polkton Police Department released a photo of the contraband, which included meth, K2 paper, Suboxone strips, two packs of Newports, and other items.
“They could have put weapons in there. Think of how dangerous that would have been in the prisons,” said Polkton Police Captain Craig Bradshaw.
Roland J. Snoke, David A. Johnson, and Trudy M. Gibbs were arrested in connection with this incident. Each suspect was then charged with providing contraband to an inmate and received $100,000 in secured bonds.
According to Bradshaw, they are all from Cumberland County, and their arrests are just the start of a statewide investigation into similar crimes in other state prisons.
He said more arrests are expected in the coming weeks.
“I know there will be several from our facility and several from facilities toward the Outer Banks. Scotland County, I know they were involved too,” Bradshaw explained. “I’m hoping once we make more arrests throughout the state, I think it will stop the problem.”
The North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections said it couldn’t provide additional details on the investigation.
However, a spokesperson said they place a high priority on the prevention of illegal contraband from entering their facilities. They also thanked the Polkton Police Department and the Anson County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.
