CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a homicide in east Charlotte Monday afternoon.
Police said they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call around 4 p.m. on the 6500 block of Barrington Drive.
At the scene, they found a person dead in the woods behind Devonshire Park.
CMPD said an initial investigation seems to indicate that the homicide did not occur at a nearby elementary school.
Channel 9’s Jonathan Lowe spoke with Major Jesus Rendon about the incident. He said it is unclear how the victim was killed.
“All we know is we have witnesses ID’d; we’re going to talk to them and find out what’s going on,” said Rendon. “We have to make sure to reassure them that we’re here to protect them.”
Neighbor Drew McFall, who lived across the street from the scene, spoke with Channel 9 about the incident.
“I’m not surprised that it happened near me; it’s happening near a lot of people,” McFall said. “It’s usually a hushed neighborhood; every once in a while, you’ll hear something off in the distance, like a gunshot or something.”
He said he’s lived in the area for four years; however, the homicide will not cause him to move.
“That’s just America; it’s pretty common in any major city,” said McFall. “I don’t want to move anywhere else; it’s a great location.”
