DALLAS, N.C. — Dallas is grappling with its third water main break in less than two weeks, forcing businesses and schools to close and leaving families without water.
The latest break has disrupted operations for many local businesses, including the Pita Wheel, whose owner, Chris Davis, expressed frustration over the repeated closures.
“Shutting down business. Having to pay salaries and you’re not open for business ... so there’s no revenue coming in,” Davis said.
The water main break has not only affected businesses but also led to the closure of every school from Carr Elementary to Gaston College.
Students like Robert Niggel are at home without water, uncertain when service will resume.
Crews have been working to repair the line, and Mayor Hayley Beaty hopes the recent fixes will prevent future widespread disruptions.
However, she emphasized the need for a more permanent solution, which may require federal or state funding.
Beaty also acknowledged the aging infrastructure, noting that the pipes and valves, installed 85 years ago, are in dire need of replacement. “This could happen again,” she warned.
In the meantime, residents are advised to boil their water for at least 24 hours once service is restored to ensure safety.
As Dallas continues to address its aging water infrastructure, the community remains hopeful for a long-term solution that will prevent further disruptions.
