Owner of Lincolnton winery plans to rebuild after fire

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A local winery in Lincolnton is still smoldering on Monday after it caught fire on Sunday morning.

The owner of Woodmill Winery told Channel 9’s Dave Faherty he is getting a lot of support from the community after the fire took out his building. It was visible on all sides of the structure upon the arrival of the first units at around 8:10 a.m., required assistance from five fire departments across two counties, involving 40 firefighters.

Despite the damage, the owner still plans to rebuild.

“Our cross…our flag…and our faith is standing as strong as ever,” owner Larry Cagle said. ”We intend to rebuild, assuming that that’s what God wants us to do. The community has just reached out to us and made us feel so humble by their caring about us.”

Muriah Oshorne and her daughter, Trinity, still can’t believe the damage at Woodmill Winery. Muriah says when Trinity was younger, the two would come here for Spooktacular every fall.

“I broke. I’m just upset,” she said. “I ran to her and told her and she couldn’t believe it. She has come down here since she was in elementary school.”

The winery is having to cancel several weddings this fall, but spared in the fire was this music works building where they hold large events and bands play. The owner is determined to have events here over the next few weeks and rebuild the winery by next spring.

The vines were not burnt, but most of the inventory is gone.

Officials also told Faherty that Catawba County assisted in the response.

The Lincoln County Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined.
