Company plans layoffs and closure of local plant

SALISBURY, N.C. — A manufacturer will lay off 65 workers in the Salisbury area as it moves to close its plant there.

General Shale, which produces bricks, stone and concrete blocks, sent notice to the North Carolina Department of Commerce on Jan. 31 of its upcoming closure at 700 S. Long St. in East Spencer. The company said it will permanently close the Rowan County facility on April 1.
