CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is transitioning from PowerSchool to Infinite Campus as the new student information system following a data breach last December.
The switch affects nearly 130,000 students whose families need to sign up for the new platform before the school year begins on August 25.
Infinite Campus will serve as a digital one-stop shop for accessing assignments, grades, class schedules, and required forms.
“We do have 141-thousand students that have moved to a new platform,” said Dr. Melissa Balknight, Deputy Superintendent of CMS. “We are reaching our families that may not be aware that the platform has changed.”
Beth Thompson, a CMS official, expressed confidence in the district’s readiness, stating, “We are absolutely confident that we will be ready for the first day of school.”
The transition to Infinite Campus was mandated by the state’s Department of Public Instruction after the PowerSchool data breach. Despite the change, CMS will continue using ParentSquare for communication and notifications.
CMS is actively contacting families to inform them about the new system, as nearly 130,000 students still need their parents to create accounts. “We have a long way to go,” Thompson acknowledged.
Balknight noted that thousands of students entering kindergarten or new to the district are still awaiting enrollment. “I think the last time that we looked at the numbe,r it was a little under two thousand students,” she said.
To address potential issues on the first day of school, CMS plans to deploy staff throughout the district to assist families who have not yet logged into Infinite Campus.
