MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — School districts are adjusting plans for Monday.
Cabarrus County students will be virtual. Gaston, Union and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools all canceled.
Channel 9’s Glenn Counts was outside First Ward Academy in Uptown.
News of the cancelation does not come as a surprise to parents in the district. After all, it’s not often that Charlotte gets this much snow.
For some the snow offered a safe way to share a tumble and laugh.
“I think it’s really fun to play in the show and I’m really glad we get another day off,” said student Charli Fulghum.
“We grew up in Charlotte and we’ve had kids in CMS for a long time, so we expected to have a couple of days off this week,” Charli’s mother, Hillary Fulghum, said.
Word of cancellation hit around 3:30 Sunday afternoon. All district offices and facilities will be closed Monday.
Tara Beth Hostetter and her sons came to Latta Park to go sledding. She said having the kids home will be a challenge, as it is for many parents,
“I think my husband and I are fortunate that we can make due from home, so when I’m on call he’ll watch the boys and we’ll switch off as needed,” said Hostetter. “But I feel bad for those parents that have to go into office tomorrow.”
Parent Blaire Chastain is thankful she has help to watch her kids, including her daughter Ella, who has become quite the snowboarder with just a day’s practice. Chastain was with her friends, who she calls her “neighborhood crew.”
“It’s definitely a challenge, but I have a community,” Chastain said. She took a group of kids in the morning last week and her friends picked them up in the afternoon. Chastain thinks they’ll have to do the same this time around.
As far as the rest of the week is concerned, officials are monitoring conditions and will let parents know if the schedule changes.
