CHARLOTTE — More than 50 people addressed the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education at a meeting Tuesday night, marking the first opportunity for parents to speak to the board since former Superintendent Dr. Crystal Hill was fired.
Several parents directed their comments at the five board members who voted to fire Hill: Board Chair Dee Rankin, Vice Chair Liz Monterrey Duval, former Chair Stephanie Sneed, Dr. Charllitta Hatch and Shamaiye Haynes. Some called on the members to resign.
“The ongoing conflicts, lack of transparency and misuse of taxpayer funds that should directly support our classrooms and our students have undermined this community’s trust,” CMS parent Ann-Margret Gidley said.
Rankin told Channel 9’s education reporter Jonathan Lowe on Monday that he had no plans to step down. At Tuesday night’s meeting, other board members also indicated they intend to remain in their positions, including Sneed.
“The kids are not alright. I will remain to keep showing up for our children, and I ask our community to keep doing the same,” Sneed said.
The meeting’s agenda also included the public report of the investigation into Hill. Hatch was the only board member to comment on the report, saying its release was in the interest of transparency.
Rankin said a working group has been formed to address how recommendations from the report will be implemented. The group will focus specifically on conflict-of-interest and contracting policies.
The specific changes under consideration have not yet been made clear. Channel 9 will continue to follow the board’s response to the report and the ongoing fallout from Hill’s firing.
