CHARLOTTE — An officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department shot a man early Tuesday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. at a QuikTrip on South Boulevard, CMPD said.

The department said it tried to pull over a car multiple times throughout the night Monday. CMPD said the driver finally pulled into the QuikTrip, near East Arrowood Road, around 2 a.m.

A person got out of the car and officers perceived a deadly threat, so they fired their gun, CMPD told Channel 9′s Erika Jackson.

Throughout the morning Tuesday, Channel 9 saw about a dozen CMPD cars and agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation scattered around the parking lot.

CMPD said officers found a gun on scene and they believe it belongs to the man who was shot by police. That man is in the hospital with injuries that are considered life threatening, CMPD said.

Our Channel 9 photographer saw a black car on the other side of a parking lot with what appears to be a window shot along a back door.

CMPD Deputy Chief Jacquelyn Hulsey said SBI is now leading the investigation and the officers involved are on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol.

“All indications are that our officers are uninjured. They were transported to the hospital for precautionary measures,” Hulsey said.

We’re working to learn if the person shot is known to CMPD and if there were multiple people in the car they pulled over.

So far, the department would only say it’s early on in the investigation.
