CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says a homicide investigation is underway after a shooting at an apartment complex in the SouthPark area.
Channel 9 went to the scene at Hazel SouthPark on Barclay Downs Drive and found officers near the building. MEDIC confirmed that a victim had been shot just before 7 a.m. The shooting happened in the garage, police said.
CMPD said about an hour later that the victim was dead, and a homicide investigation is underway.
“We got to learn how to be cautious. When you’re cautious, you’re aware,” said a Hazel SouthPark resident, who didn’t want to be identified. “We (Charlotte) got to grow, and this is not growing. When you hear about somebody dying and losing their life, it’s pure wickedness.”
Police haven’t said if they’ve identified a suspect at this time.
CMPD said the victim was a woman, but her name hasn’t been released yet.
A major with the department noted that the shooting took place in a high-traffic area, with the SouthPark Mall and other businesses near several neighborhoods.
“Stop playing games with people,” the Hazel SouthPark resident told Channel 9. “This is not a game. This is real life. We’re out here playing with love and hearts and people’s minds, and we got to stop doing that.”
